As the window for developing new energy recovery facilities seems to be beginning to close, ENDS Waste & Bioenergy (EWB) examines the leading pipeline projects vying to make it over the line to FID next year
7 & 8 of Top Ten Pipeline EfW Projects to Watch in 2025
“7&8, Qair’s Horsham (CHER) and Northacre EfW projects
France-based Qair has two fully consented and permitted projects in its portfolio, both of which are well located and have at least some waste likely to head their way, should they make it over the finishing line.
However, speaking to sources in the waste sector EWB has been told it would seem unlikely both will be developed. Before Qair took over Northacre this summer, it had been rumoured an EPC deal was close with a certain well-known business based in Switzerland.
However, since Northacre joined the portfolio sources have indicated that perhaps waste originally planned for the CHER facility in Horsham could be sent to Northacre or vice versa. As a result while one could well be built out, EWB finds it hard to see both making financial close.”

1 of Top Ten Pipeline EfW Projects to Watch in 2025
“1, MVV: Medworth
Of all the projects in England, MVV’s Medworth-based EfW would appear the most likely to make financial close in 2025. One source EWB spoke to about the project indicated this could happen as “early as January”.
Should it move to construction it has permits and planning in place to process up to 625,600 tonnes a year, although MVV says it plans to process about 523,500t/yr. It will also have capacities of 60MWe (gross) and 55MWe (net) as well as 50MWth.
If Medworth does make financial close next year it would make 2025 the best year in terms of tonnages to cross the line since 2022 on its own.”

‘No More Finance for Greenfield EfW Projects’ – lenders
Financial support is moving towards backing carbon capture and upgrading older brownfield waste-processing facilities in the future
“Senior leaders from leading investment banks have indicated their appetite for backing new energy-from-waste plants is coming to an end.
Speaking on 4 December 2024 at the London-based Energy from Waste Conference lenders told the event the market for investment in carbon capture and upgrading older facilities was more likely to attract lenders, than new build EfW projects.”

EfW projects, in terms of overall tonnage, making financial close since 2019
“Only two new EfW projects have reached financial close in the last two calendar years at the time of writing Encyclis Walsall-based facility and most recently Viridor’s Tilbury-based facility.”
