Home > Action > Call on Government to keep promise to crack down on waste incineration

Please write to your MP, calling upon them to demand that the Government makes good on their recent promise to crack down on waste incineration.

On the 12th of December 2024 Lucy Powell, the Leader of the House of Commons, told Parliament:

“The Government are committed to developing a circular economy in which we do not need waste incinerators”.

This was followed by a Government announcement on the 30th of December that:

  • “The Government is cracking down on waste incinerators with stricter standards for new builds. New standards will increase recycling and stop us building new waste incinerators unnecessarily”.
  • “…new energy from waste plants…must be efficient and support net zero and our economic growth mission, before they can get the backing needed to be built”.
  • “A proposed plant must not compete with greater waste prevention, reuse, or recycling, or result in overcapacity of residual waste treatment”.

Working together

No Incinerator 4 Horsham Community Group (Ni4H) continues to work together with other community groups across the country, and UK Without Incineration Network (UKWIN).

Please help ensure that the Government’s recently announced ‘crackdown’ on incinerators, does in fact prevent new waste incineration capacity from being built unnecessarily, and that any new standards are applied to all unbuilt incinerators, including the proposed Horsham incinerator, expansions and refurbishments, and not just to those few that have yet to receive planning permission.
